Halloween is a fun time for kids to plan costumes, dress up, dream about candy, tell spooky stories and more! October is a great time of year to bring fun Halloween-themed story problems into your math classroom. It’s also a very important time of year to introduce bar models (tape diagrams) and other visual models to support students in their perseverance and independent problem-solving skills. The word problems in this product all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labelling and finding the unknown.
 
These word problems are differentiated with three different versions so that you can work on problem solving skills with your students at all levels! Students can work on the level that is just right for them, or they can work their way through all of the levels! Use this simple guide to determine which set of problems is best for each student. Just look for the level icon at the top of each page.
Spider level: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Single-step Multiplication/Division with some remainders included. Decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to tenths.
Candy Corn level: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Multi-step multiplication and division. All operations on decimals with decimals to the hundredths. Bar models, concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used. Some measurement conversion included
Pumpkin level: advanced problem-solving skills. Challenging multi-step word problems. Multiplication and division with large numbers. Decimal operations to thousandths. Multi-step word problems with measurement conversion included.
These story problems work great for math centers, small group instruction, distance learning and more!
